My Favourite Things by Pomplamoose
Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 4:45PM This has got to be the oddest version of 'My Favourite Things' I've ever come across, but I really love it! There are so many things here that resonate with me on so many levels. I even like the soap ad at the end (check sister's face when he says "if you want one of these...". And nice to see lots of people did... heh heh.)
The band are called Pomplamoose and they seem to have been posting 'videosongs' on YouTube for a year or so. I'm fascinated by the way they record video along with audio and edit it all in sync so you see the loops and triggered samples as well as hear them. When the screen is split into 4 it reminds me of the opening sequence from The Brady Bunch. :-)
Also - they seem to have started out by recording a fair selection of covers, ranging from 'Mister Sandman' by the Chordettes, through 'Nature Boy' by Nat King Cole to 'Single Ladies' by Beyonce. It's a very clever strategy – win an audience by performing unique cover versions of popular songs, and then drop in the odd original once their audience has become established. They give away the covers as free downloads and charge $1 per original track. As of today they have 57,000+ subscribers to their YouTube channel, so I'm guessing it's starting to pay off.
Here's an original (I think). It's damn good. That chorus has a wicked groove! :-)
I'm inspired by the DIY approach, but there is clearly a great deal of talent here as well. It's hard to know whether or not the DIY thing is born of necessity, or whether they just thought it would be a good marketing approach. In either case – it works.

Ok, so on further investigation I found the following statement on their YouTube page...
A VideoSong is a new Medium with two rules:
1. What you see is what you hear (no lip-syncing for instruments or voice).
2. If you hear it, at some point you see it (no hidden sounds).
What an interesting way to set parameters around creativity!
